About Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, which translates to “Island of Women”, is a small, beautiful island located a short ferry ride from Cancun. At only five miles long and half a mile wide, Isla Mujeres is tiny, but no less intriguing than any other Caribbean destination. Isla Mujeres is also the name of the town on the island – the name is used interchangeably.

Isla Mujeres’s terrain is flat, with beaches on all sides, and its climate averages 80 degrees F (30 degrees C). Isla Mujeres is extremely accessible, and many visit just for the day. Ferry boats run every half hour during daylight between Isla Mujeres and Puerto Juarez on the mainland.

Unlike Cancun or Playa, Isla Mujeres retains a quaint, cozy atmosphere, where most merchants close their stores at 6pm and families gather together in their homes in the evening, mending their fishing nets and relaxing.

Isla Mujeres, once a fishing village, has become a major tourist attraction thanks to its incredible natural reefs, beautiful beaches and tranquil atmosphere. The island also has excellent shopping and great restaurants – both for fine and casual dining, as well as plenty of activities and amenities for the kids.

Isla Mujeres has a rich history, filled with Mayan influence and legend. According to Mayans who still reside in the area, legend has it that Spanish slavers came to the island in search of slaves for Cuban mines – but found nothing but old statues which they perceived to be statues of women. Thus, the island was named “Isla Mujeres,” or the Island of Women. Also according to legend, the island was once used for Mayan fertility ceremonies.
